Did you know #MartinLutherKingJr spoke in #Edenton twice? We are sharing the @barkerhouseedenPost today:
Dr. King first came to Edenton on December 20, 1962 at the invitation of Reverend Frederick LaGarde, pastor of the Providence Baptist Church and regional representative of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and Golden Asro Frinks, a national Civil Rights activist and local @naacp leader. Both Mr. Frinks and Reverend LaGarde were leaders in the Edenton Movement, a coalition of Civil Rights organizations that worked to de-segregate Edenton's public buildings and promote racial equity.

Both of Dr. King's addresses (he returned in 1966) were held at the "old" National Guard Armory on Broad Street, and massive crowds were in attendance.

POV: It’s another peaceful night taking in the beauty of the Edenton Bay in Edenton, NC.

Let us introduce you to Mr. W.C. Witherspoon, who served as Principal of Marian Anderson High School from 1955-1969.

Marian Anderson High School, originally named Sawyer’s Creek High School, was opened in 1952 for Camden County’s Black students. In 1956, Witherspoon changed the school’s name to honor Marian Anderson, a famous African American opera singer.

In 1969, students were integrated into the existing Camden County High School and Marion Anderson became Camden County Middle School.

Today, you can visit Marian Anderson High School in Camden, NC as part of the NC Black Heritage Tour.
